History of this Network of Excellence

EPIXnet is the result of an amalgamation and streamlining of a number of Expressions of Interest that were submitted to the 6th framework program in June 2002. One of those was the e-PHOTON initiative, which focused on material, component, system and network aspects of advanced photonic networks. It was initiated by the eiTT, the European Institute for Telecommunication Technology, in which the Universities of Eindhoven (COBRA), Gent (IMEC/INTEC), Denmark (COM), Torino (Politecnico) and Duisburg-Essen are cooperating. When – afterwards – it became clear that photonic networks and photonic components were part of a different call, the e-PHOTON initiative was reoriented. The network part merged with the ONe-proposal and has meanwhile become the Network of Excellence e-PHOTON/ONe. The materials and component part has joined forces with other initiatives in the field of nanophotonics and of ultra-short pulse sources and has become the present ePIXnet proposal with a focus on photonic integration for a variety of application domains. Joint organisation of activities is envisaged in the field of education and training, organisation of workshops, and in providing testbeds for developed components and circuits. While there are strong links with e-PHOTON/ONe the actual partner overlap between both networks is very small. We consider this configuration, with two independent but closely interconnected networks in the fields of components and circuits on one side, and systems and networks on the other side, as a very powerful combination.
